Need to know what to wear in Hawaii? Whether you are post-partum or plus size. Here’s a guide to help you feel and look great on your Hawaiian vacation, no matter your size.
Hawaii is a dream destination for many, offering a unique blend of tropical beauty, vibrant culture, and a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re a woman planning a trip to these enchanting islands, packing the right clothes is essential for comfort and style. I have five children, so I always try to pack outfits that are fashionable and functional.
Day & Beach Wear
Lightweight and Airy Hawaiian Fabrics
Hawaii’s weather is predominantly warm and humid. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and rayon. These materials will keep you cool and comfortable whether you’re lounging on the beach or exploring the local markets. If you are doing something more active, layering up is always the best policy.

Make a Statement with Prints
Hawaiian fashion is known for its vibrant colors and bold prints, especially floral and tropical designs. Embrace this style with sundresses, skirts, and tops that reflect the island’s flora and fauna. Not only are these prints fashionable, but they also help you blend in with the local Aloha spirit. I also like striped and other statement prints.

Versatile Swimwear for Post-partum & Plus Size Women
Swimwear is a must in Hawaii. Choose comfortable swimsuits for swimming and sunbathing but chic enough to pair with a skirt or shorts for a casual lunch by the beach. A stylish one-piece or a high-waisted bikini can be versatile and flattering options that celebrate your womanly shape.
I am pretty active with snorkeling and scuba diving, so I like one-pieces with ruched mid-sections and higher necklines that allow me to move and stretch while keeping my chest fully covered.

I also bring a two-piece 3mm wetsuit top and bottom for swimming in waterfalls and streams and snorkeling in the Ocean. It provides a little extra warmth and some skin protection.

Transitioning from Day to Night
Layering Pieces in Hawaii
Evenings in Hawaii can be cooler, especially if you’re near the beach. Bring a light cardigan, a denim jacket, or a shawl to layer over your daytime outfits. These can also come in handy in air-conditioned restaurants and shops.

Casual Evening Wear
Hawaiian evenings are usually casual. A nice maxi dress or a pair of linen pants with a pretty top can be perfect for dinner and sunset watching. Stick to light fabrics and breezy styles. I bring a lot of white cover-ups since they can be used in the day or at night.

Comfortable Footwear
A post on what to wear in Hawaii wouldn’t be complete without discussing footwear. Your footwear should be comfortable and versatile. Think sandals or flip-flops for the beach, comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing and biking, and dressier sandals for the evening.
Avoid high heels, as they are impractical for most locations in Hawaii. I love my Keen Elle Backstrap Sandals in Navy, Natural, and Birch. I could walk in them all day, and they work on most hikes, and the natural ones transition well with maxi dresses in the evening.

Accessories to Complete Your Look
Sun Protection
Sun hats, sunglasses, and a good SPF sunscreen are essential for protecting yourself from the strong Hawaiian sun.
A wide-brimmed hat not only adds style to your outfit but also provides extra protection.

I also bring a long-sleeved swim top for days when I know I am going to be out in the sun doing active things in the sun that day.

I love to wear a baseball cap when doing physical activities like hiking, biking, and swimming. It fits so well under helmets and keeps my hair out of my face.
Minimal Jewelry
Keep jewelry minimal and tropical-themed. Think shell necklaces, wooden bracelets, or floral hair accessories. These add a touch of island flair without being too heavy or uncomfortable in the heat.

Purses & Bags
A large tote or beach bag is useful for carrying your essentials – sunscreen, a water bottle, a book, and a towel. If you are on the go like me and want your hands free, you can opt for the not-so-cool but very functional fanny pack. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s sturdy and stylish to hold the things you need for the day.

Final Thoughts
Dressing for Hawaii is all about comfort, color, and embracing the island lifestyle. Choose outfits that are relaxed and airy, and don’t be afraid to experiment with vibrant prints and colors.
Remember, the key to Hawaiian fashion is to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and natural beauty of the islands. Remember, pick clothing that will make you feel and look your best. Now you know what to wear to Hawaii. Happy packing!
