Last March, our family visited Celebration Key during our cruise on the Carnival Mardi Gras, and it ended up being one of the easiest and most relaxing port days we’ve had as a family.
As a mom, I feel like cruise port days can sometimes become more stressful than fun. Between organizing towels, sunscreen, hungry kids, bathrooms, and trying actually to relax for five minutes yourself, it can feel like a lot.
Carnival’s Celebration Key felt different, though. The entire destination felt thoughtfully designed for families.

The first thing we noticed when we got off the ship was how new and clean everything felt. The walkways, pools, seating areas, and restaurants all looked freshly built and well-maintained. It honestly gave more “new beach resort” energy than a typical cruise port.
The water was beautiful turquoise, and the entire area felt bright, open, and easy to navigate.
Calypso Beach Club vs Starfish Lagoon

We spent most of our day between the Calypso Beach area and Starfish Lagoon, and both had very different vibes.
Calypso Beach Club is geared toward adults, but there were a ton of teens around. The atmosphere was lively with music, swim-up bars, and a more upbeat resort feel. It definitely felt like the “fun vacation” side of Celebration Key.
Meanwhile, Starfish Lagoon ended up being my favorite area as a mom and is supposed to be for families.
It felt much more family-focused with calmer water, splash-friendly areas, and a more relaxed atmosphere overall. My kids spent forever swimming and playing there, and I appreciated that it felt easier to keep an eye on everyone without feeling overwhelmed by crowds.
One thing I really liked was that there was enough space for everyone. Even with lots of people there, it didn’t feel packed on top of each other the way some cruise beaches can feel.
The Sand & Beach Experience
The beaches themselves were beautiful, especially the water color, but I will say the sand was a little rockier than I expected in some areas.
It wasn’t terrible by any means, but it wasn’t that super soft powdery sand you sometimes picture in the Bahamas either. Water shoes definitely wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially for younger kids who want to play in the water.
Still, the kids didn’t care at all. They were just excited to swim and be in the water all day.
Thoughts on the Food

The food situation was interesting.
Celebration Key has several free food options included, which was convenient since everything was close to the beach and pools. As a parent, that convenience really matters because nobody wants to drag tired, hungry kids all over the place in the heat.
That being said, the free food at Celebration Key itself felt very cafeteria-style. It was quick and easy, but definitely more basic than the food we enjoyed onboard the Mardi Gras.
Honestly, we thought the food on the actual ship was much better overall.
Guys Burger Joint, Shaq’s Big Chicken, the pizza, and even the buffet onboard Mardi Gras was tastier and higher quality compared to the island food options. The downside is that going back to the ship obviously takes more time and isn’t quite as convenient once everyone is settled at the beach.
For us, we mostly stayed on the island for convenience and grabbed simple food there during the day.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Celebration Key ended up being one of our favorite family cruise destinations because everything felt so easy.
The clean new facilities, family-friendly layout, beautiful water, and separate areas for different age groups made the entire day feel low-stress and enjoyable for both kids and adults.
As a mom, I appreciated that the kids had space to play safely while the adults could still relax and enjoy the atmosphere too.
If you’re sailing on the Carnival Mardi Gras with kids, I definitely think Celebration Key is worth looking forward to.
