Pirates of Nassau Museum Review: Is It Worth Visiting with Kids?
During our family trip to Nassau, I wanted to find something fun for the kids that wasn’t just another beach day. We were arriving on a cruise ship, and I kept seeing expensive cruise excursions for simple downtown activities. After doing a little research, I realized the Pirates of Nassau Museum was incredibly easy to do on our own. Honestly, I’m so glad we skipped the cruise excursion and explored it independently.
If your family is visiting Nassau, especially on a cruise, this is one activity you absolutely do NOT need to book through the cruise line.

Easy to Visit Without a Cruise Excursion
This was probably my favorite part as a parent.
The museum is located just a short walk from the Nassau cruise port, right in the downtown area near shopping and restaurants. Once we got off the ship, we simply walked there ourselves. No shuttle, no complicated directions, and definitely no need to pay cruise ship prices.
Honestly, it felt much less stressful doing it independently. We could move at our own pace, spend as much time as we wanted downtown afterward, and save money at the same time.
If you’re comfortable walking a few blocks, this is one of the easiest Nassau activities to do on your own.
First Impressions
The second we walked inside, the kids were excited.
The entrance looks like an old pirate dock with dim lighting, pirate music, wooden walkways, and themed displays everywhere. Instead of feeling like a traditional museum, it honestly feels more like stepping into a pirate movie.
The atmosphere immediately pulled everyone in.

The Pirate Ship Was a Huge Hit
The full-size pirate ship replica was definitely the highlight for my kids.
They loved walking around the deck, looking at cannons, and pretending they were pirates searching for treasure. There were plenty of opportunities for them to explore and stay engaged without feeling like they were just reading signs the entire time.
As a mom, I appreciated that the museum was interactive enough to keep their attention from start to finish.
Educational Without Feeling Boring
One thing I really loved was that the museum mixed history with entertainment really well.
The exhibits explain Nassau’s history as a pirate republic during the 1700s and teach visitors about famous pirates like Blackbeard. There are displays about pirate ships, weapons, treasure, and what daily life was actually like for pirates.
My older child enjoyed learning the history, while my younger child mostly loved the adventure aspect. Somehow, it worked well for both ages.

Perfect Break From the Nassau Heat
If you’ve been to Nassau, you know how hot and humid it can get.
The museum is fully indoors and air-conditioned, which honestly felt amazing after walking around downtown. It ended up being the perfect midday activity when everyone needed a break from the sun.
For families traveling with children, having a cool indoor activity option is such a bonus.
Is It Scary for Younger Kids?
A few areas are dark and there are some sound effects, but I wouldn’t call it scary.
My kids thought it was exciting more than anything else. If your child enjoys pirate stories, treasure hunts, or adventure movies, they’ll probably love the experience.

Is It Worth It?
Absolutely.
For the price, I thought it was one of the better family-friendly activities we did in Nassau. It was affordable, entertaining, educational, and incredibly easy to do independently from the cruise ship.
Sometimes cruise excursions can make simple activities feel complicated or overpriced, but this was one place where exploring on our own worked perfectly.
Final Thoughts
I would absolutely recommend the Pirates of Nassau Museum for families visiting the Bahamas.
It’s fun, manageable, educational, and easy to fit into your day whether you’re staying in Nassau or visiting on a cruise. The pirate ship, interactive exhibits, and pirate history made it memorable for both the kids and adults.
And most importantly — you can easily do this on your own without booking through the cruise line.
